Recovering Accidentally Deleted Files
Before you request a file restoration from tape, it may benefit you to try to salvage the file first. Although an active copy of a file may have been deleted from your network drive space, you may be able to recover the file yourself without assistance from OCCS using the system salvage tools.
When a file is deleted, is not immediately deleted from the system, but is removed from your view and placed in a trash can for complete removal later (called purging). Individual users can recover files that are stored in this "trash can."
To recover a file while logged into your network account, complete the following steps:
- Open My Computer and navigate the file system to your network drive and directory where the file was last known to be.
- Right-click on the directory. The menu that opens will have an N Salvage Files selection available. (This process is only available only for Novell server drives, not for local or other Microsoft mapped drives).
- When you select N Salvage Files , the system will bring up a box of all files deleted in that directory that are still on the system and recoverable.
- Select any file(s) that you want restored and click the Salvage File button. The salvaged files will be restored to the directory from which they were deleted.
An additional method to attempt to salvage files is to work from your desktop.
- While logged in with your network account, right-click on the large red N in your system tray.
- Select NetWare Utilities from the menu that opens.
- Select Salvage.
- The system will open a dialog box in which you should select the Novell server, drive and directory to define the path to where the file was stored prior to deletion.
- Click OK to see a list of all salvageable files from that location.
- Select the file that you want to salvage a file and click Salvage File.
