Introduction to iPrint
iPrint is a method of printing that uses a small client to authenticate users to the University printing system without requiring users have a full Novell NetWare client installed on their computer system. This is useful for users who want to gain access to the University printing system from anywhere on the campus (while not necessarily at their desk). It is not necessary to install the iPrint client on University owned andmaintained systems, these applications are built into ODU standard installation. The client is made available to all faculty and staff as well as students for their use. If you have a University owned and maintained computer system and do not have an iPrint client installed, please contact the TSP for your area to remedy the situation.
The client is available for most Microsoft Windows systems, including 2000, XP, and Vista using either Internet Explorer 5.5 or Firefox 2.0.12 or higher. It is also available for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard using Firefox 2.0.12 or higher. At this time there is no iPrint support for any operating systems or browsers outside of those listed.
The process for installation of the client and/or printers & MFD's is the same for all operating systems listed above.
To Get Started Using iPrint
To start using iPrint you will first need to turn on your computer and login as a user that has administrative rights. Next you will need to click on the appropriate web link at the top of this web page that corresponds to the type of printer or multi function device you wish to install. An example of this is if you are a faculty member and need to install a printer in your office you would need to click on the Faculty / Staff Printers link. Or if you are going to install a multifunction device you would need to click on that link. Once you click the link a University iPrint page will load that displays a list of all the available printers.
Installing the iPrint Client
After you click on one of the links above, at the top right of the subsequent web page (printer list) you will see a link that that states 'Install the iPrint Client'.
Click on this link and save the file to your computer. You now need to close out of your browser; failing to close the browser will not correctly install the software, and run the iPrint client setup that you downloaded. Follow the onscreen instructions for the setup. Once completed, restart your browser and navigate back to the necessary printer page using the web links.
Installing iPrint Printers
Once you navigate your browser back to the iPrint pages, down the left hand side of the printer page you will see all the printers or MFD's (depending on which link you selected) available to you. Scroll down until you locate the one you would like to install. Once you have located the correct printer, click on the name of the printer to install it.
You should now be required to enter your Midas ID and password. Only printers that you have rights to use will install correctly; if you do not have rights to the printer the printer will not install. This means that a student cannot install a faculty/staff printer and vise versa.
If you find there is a printer that you need to use and do not have rights to do so please contact your area's TSP. Once installed your printer should now be displayed in your printers' directory and available for use. If there are other printers or MFD's you need to install repeat the directions.
If you run into any issues contact your respective TSP for assistance.
