SECURITY

There are a number of security concerns of interest to participants in the Mobile Monarch Notebook Program.

Theft Prevention and Response
ODU strives to provide a safe and friendly learning environment for its students; however, students should still exercise reasonable caution and common sense to protect their personal safety and that of their property. Your notebook represents a significant investment to you both monetarily and academically.

Here are a few helpful tips for protecting your notebook:

  • Never leave your notebook unattended.
  • Like any other valuable piece of equipment, never leave your notebook in plain sight in your car.
  • When you are working in a single location for any length of time (e.g., your residence hall, the library, and a computer lab) take a moment to secure your notebook with a security lock.
  • Computrace® Personal is a third-party notebook recovery service available through Lenovo. You can read more about it on the Lenovo ThinkVantage Web site. It is available as an option during the notebook purchase or later through the Lenovo Web site.
  • Back up your important data frequently.

Further information about campus safety and protecting your property while at ODU can be obtained from the ODU Campus Police Department.

Virus Protection
Keeping your machine virus free not only protects you but everyone else on the network. By following some simple steps, you can keep your virus protection current and clean with scheduled scans. To download the newest version of McAfee Virus Scan product for faculty, staff, and students, visit the Downloads page. Requires MIDAS ID authentication.

Malware Protection
Your notebook's performance could be compromised without your knowledge through malicious software commonly referred to as Malware. There is no single solution which will keep your notebook completely safe, but by following smart computing practices you can help limit the likelihood that you will be compromised.
