Connection Troubleshooting

What if I don't have a connection to the network?

  1. Do you have the correct cable?
  2. Is the cable in the correct port?
  3. Am I connected to the network?

Do you have the correct cable?
  1. To connect your computer to the ODU network you need an RJ45 Ethernet cord like the one below.

Is the cable in the correct port?
  1. Your laptop or desktop should have a port for the RJ45 Ethernet cord that should be similar to this:

  1. Your dorm should have a port like this:

The port for your Ethernet cable is going to be red or pink.
Telephone ports are black or blue. Plug the other end of your RJ45
Ethernet Cord into the red/pink port reading "T1-DXXX".

Am I connected to the network?
  1. Check to make sure your RJ45 Ethernet cord is connected to your PC/Mac and the other end is connected to the proper port in the wall.
  2. Go to Network Connections and make sure your Local Area Connection is enabled.
  3. Go to start->accessories->command prompt.
  4. In the command prompt type, ipconfig /all

Now check to see if the IP address starts with 172 or 169.

A 169 IP means you have no connection to the network.

If your IP is 169 contact the OCCS main office at (757) 683-3189.
